Chinatown (Petaling Street)
The Shopping & Food Haven in
Kuala Lumpur

Chinatown_Petaling_Street

The Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur, also known as Petaling Street, is the liveliest and busiest street in the capital. The Malaysian Chinese more often refer to this street as 'chee Cheong Kai' in Cantonese. There are dozens of shops lined up along both sides of the street with hundreds of shoppers busy shopping, bargaining and haggling with the traders during the day.

All sorts of items can be found here at Chinatown. Clothes, wallets, handbags, watches, shoes, women's accessories, vcds, dvds...the list goes on and on and on. Petaling Street is especially famous for its imitation goods. Designer brands like Rolex, Seiko, Mont Blanc, Cartier, Christian Dior, Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klien, Armani, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton and countless many other brands can be found here with the price being a fraction of the real thing. And the interesting thing is, some of these items are almost as good as the real thing, in terms of its external appearance. But when you take a closer look, a really close look.....need I say more?

By Night, Petaling Street is transformed into an unbelievably crowded pedestrian mall. You can find almost everything in this colourful, vibrant, noisy, but certainly delightful night bazaar.

The scene of shoppers moving from stall to stall haggling with the peddlers, while the peddlers and hawkers with their wares complain and moan about the profits they make with the bargained price is definitely an eye opener for the tourists who visit Petaling Street.

Bargaining is an absolute MUST in Petaling Street. Bargain really HARD! It's the ideal place for you to hone your bargaining skills. A TIP for tourists who visit Chinatown: The price for most of the pirated items like watches and clothings can be bargained and negotiated to as much as 60% - 70% lower than the stated price. How much discount you get would now depend on your bargaining skills. So, work on sharpening your bargaining skills before you go there!

When you're in Petaling Street, you're in FOOD HAVEN! Food is certainly plentiful here, with different varities and choices. There are many restaurants here which serve unbelievably delicious foods that would certainly tantalize your taste buds.

Customers who patronize the restaurants here are normally given a menu, complete with pictures and images of food, giving them a good indication of how their food would look like.

Foods like Hokkien Mee, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Assam Laksa, Curry Noodles are definitely a "MUST-Try" when you're in Chinatown. Of course, for those who don't fancy the local delicacies here, there's always McDonalds at the 1st shop in Petaling Street.

You can find a few hotels located inside Petaling Street, a 3-star Business Class and leisure hotel (Hotel Malaya), Swiss Inn Hotel. and a "no frills" hotel (Stayorange Hotel) should you choose to stay here.

A word of caution here. If you're visiting Petaling Street at night, take extra care of your belongings because the street tends to get abit crowded. And crowded streets are the best places for snatch thieves and pick pockets to operate.

How to get there? Simple! Just hop on to the Putra LRT and disembark at the Pasar Seni station. The Pasar Seni station is just a few minutes walk from Chinatown. Alternatively, you could go there by taxi.

If you're in Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend that you visit Petaling Street, as it will definitely be an Eye-Opening experience!
