Getting Around Malacca
The Historic City of Malaysia

Getting around Malacca (Melaka) is easy as Malacca itself is small enough to explore on foot. Most of the tourist attractions in Malacca town are within walking distance from each other. Besides walking, you could also choose to get around Malacca town by taxis, buses and trishaws. However, if you wish to visit tourist attractions located at the outskirts of the city, you could either use a taxi or rent a car to get there.

Getting Around Malacca by Taxi

Traveling by Taxi is certainly the most convenient way to get around Malacca. However, there are not as many taxis trolling the streets of Malacca as compared to Kuala Lumpur. Their fares are also relatively higher than those in KL. Although the taxis in Malaysia are required by law to follow a meter, there are not many metered taxis in Malacca. Pickup from a hotel usually starts at around RM 10. Do try to bargain before boarding the taxis.

Getting Around Malacca by Bus

Traveling by bus is an easy way to get around Malacca. Bus services within the city of Malacca and the state are provided by several bus companies. As Malacca is a small place, there aren't as many traffic jams as big cities like Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown. Bus stations are available at designated spots around town. When traveling by bus, do prepare small change and coins for the ticket machines as they do not return change. Not only is traveling by bus the best way to mingle with Malaccans, it is inexpensive too!

Getting Around Malacca by "Beca"

"Beca" the Malay word for trishaw (a tricycle with a side seat for two), is one of the most popular modes of transport among tourists as it is a novel way to explore Malacca. A trishaw ride is reminiscent of the days gone by. It is a thoroughly enjoyable way to get around Malacca along with the knowledgable trishaw rider cum tour guide. Knowing all the major tourist attractions like the back of their own hands, you can count on the trishaw pullers to take you there.

Although the "Beca" is nearly as expensive as taxis, I personally think it's worth the little extra just for the fun and experience that you get from riding a Beca. As the trishaw riders' command of English is somewhat limited, try to speak to them clearly and slowly.

If you think trishaw is the thing for you, then it would be helpful for you to know that you're able to get them at the Dutch Square and outside the Mahkota Parade Shopping Centre. Although trishaws are fun for short trips, they aren't very suitable for long trips. As for the fares, the same rule applies to trishaws as they apply to taxis, Bargain before you board them.

Historical Malacca Tour

If you're thinking of making a one day trip to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur, you don't actually have to go through the hassles of looking for transportation and planning your trip (which would waste a lot of your time, and when you're here in Malaysia, you have no time to waste because there's just too much to see and enjoy!).

What you can do is simply take a Historical Malacca Private Tour from Kuala Lumpur or a Historical Malacca Tour from Kuala Lumpur to enjoy a hassle-free sight-seeing experience!

Whether you're taking the bus, taxi, trishaw or driving yourself, you'd definitely need a map around Malacca. So, for a simple Tourist Attractions Map of Malacca, please Click here.
