Pahang Travel Destinations

Taman Negara

Want to know the most interesting Pahang travel destinations and tourist attractions? Sure! Let me have the pleasure of being your humble travel guide to the beautiful state of Pahang, The State of Lush Highlands.

Pahang, also known by its Arabic honorific, Darul Makmur (Abode of Tranquility) is the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia. It is bordered to the north by Kelantan, to the west by Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, to the south by Johor and to the east by Terengganu and the South China Sea.

The capital of Pahang is Kuantan, a vibrant and bustling town famous for its "salted fish" (Some of you may be asking...salted fish? Yes...Salted fish...). Approximately 45 kilometers from Kuantan is the Royal town of Pekan.

There are many interesting places to visit in Pahang. So, sit back, relax and let's explore some of the Pahang travel destinations and tourist attractions together.

Taman NegaraPahang is home to the National Park (also known as Taman Negara in the Malay language), one of the oldest rain forests in the world. It is estimated to be 130 million years old, older than the rain forests of Congo and the Amazon.

Taman Negara, which spans across the state of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu is a sanctuary to many rare flowers and animals. When you're here, you can also find beautiful streams, picturesque waterfalls and scenic caves waiting for you to explore.

If you are the adventurous type and you like mountain climbing, Taman Negara is also home to the majestic Gunung Tahan (Tahan Mountain in English) the tallest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia.

Gunung Tahan stands majestically at a height of 2,187 meters and to reach the summit, you would have to travel 55 kilometers by foot. There are 3 trails to reach the summit of this mountain. The Kuala Tahan trail (classic trail) - 4 days, the Merapoh trail (Sungai Relau trail) - 2 days and the Kelantan Trail (new trail).

The other Pahang travel destination worth mentioning here is Genting Highlands, or better known as The City of Entertainment. Some locals even call Genting the "Playground of Malaysia".

Genting HighlandsInterestingly, some may tell you that Genting is actually situated in Selangor and not in Pahang.

The interesting fact is, Genting sits on the border of Selangor and Pahang. In fact, most of the properties of Genting Highlands is actually situated in Pahang.

Genting Highlands is a place for you and your family to enjoy cool refreshing air combined with fun-filled attractions with entertainment and the luxury of an international class accommodations.

You can find almost everything here. From theme parks, both indoors and outdoors, to luxury hotels, from a wide variety of restaurants to convention centres, this city of entertainment caters for visitors from all walks of life. On top of that, Genting Highlands is also home to the one and only casino in Malaysia.

In my personal opinion, the theme park is the main attraction here. I remember when I was young, when my dad brought the family up to Genting, the main thing my siblings and I looked forward to was the theme park.

Even now, as an adult, I am still very much drawn to the attractions at the theme park. In my personal opinion, Genting is really the place to bring your family for a fun-filled exciting vacation!

Cameron HighlandsBesides Genting Highlands, another well-known Pahang travel destination is Cameron Highlands.

Compared to Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands is more suited to those who are looking for a cool and quiet place to relax themselves and to get away from the hectic city life.

The major attractions of Cameron Highlands are the Rose Garden, the Cactus Valley, the Strawberry parks, fruit orchards and vegetable farms that spread extensively on the mountain slopes. The rose garden is home to more than 600 species of roses and is definitely a romantic place for couples to spend their vacation.

Tasik ChiniPahang is home to one of the most famous lakes in Malaysia, Tasik Chini (Chini Lake). This lake is the second largest natural lake in Malaysia.

Legend has it that a giant dragon, known as the Chini Dragon lurks beneath the murky waters of this magnificent lake.

Legend also has it that underneath the magnificent lake, there once existed a well-populated grand Khmer city. This grand city was submerged underwater due to a big flood. It is rumored that the ancient artifacts of this ancient city can still be found underneath the murky waters of the lake.

However, until now, the lost city and its artifacts have still not been located. Reason being, the visibility of the waters of the lake is near zero and this is what hinders the researchers' attempts to go deep into the lake.

Tioman IslandAnother famous Pahang Travel destination is non other than the amazingly beautiful Pulau Tioman (Tioman Island).

This island is among the top ten most beautiful and idyllic islands in the world. Tioman Island is the largest island off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The underwater world around the island is a vast marine treasure trove with vibrant coral gardens, a plethora of seashells and limpets, thorny sea urchins, seaweeds, starfishes and a myriad of colourful fish. When you're here, you can participate in a variety of activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, water skiing, windsurfing and deep sea diving.

The few Pahang Travel destinations and tourist attractions I've just shared with you here are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot more interesting places to visit in Pahang. And because it's impossible to put everything on this one page, I will be starting (and constantly updating) a new section on this page specially dedicated to the amazing and beautiful Pahang travel destinations and tourist attractions. So, do check back often!

Meanwhile, if you are planning or have already planned a vacation to Pahang and will be coming here soon, it would be helpful to have a Pahang Map (requires pdf reader) to make your traveling easier. A Kuantan map (requires pdf reader) would also come in handy if you plan to visit Kuantan, the capital of Pahang.

Hope it helps!
