Getting to Penang

Penang Ferry, Penang

Penang Travel - Getting to Penang, The Pearl of the Orient, is easy and convenient. There are several ways to get there. You can either choose to get there by Air, by Rail, by Bus, by Ferry or you could even drive yourself there if you want to.

Penang Travel - Getting there by Air

Penang is easily accessible by air with daily flights from major cities of the region. It has direct links with Singapore, Bangkok, Nagoya, Medan, Xiamen (China) and Madras. The airlines that service Penang are:

These airlines fly straight into the Penang International Airport (previously known as the Bayan Lepas International Aiport), which is situated in the Bayan Lepas area of Penang. The airport is located about 16km south of Georgetown, the capital of Penang.

Once you reach the Penang International Airport, you can simply catch a taxi to get to your desired destination. The taxis from the airport operate under a coupon system arranged with the Airport. All you have to do is to proceed to the designated counter and puchase a coupon. The fares between the airport and various destinations in Penang are fixed. Air-conditioned taxis and limousines charge a slightly higher fare as compare to the normal taxis (a price you have to pay for comfort, I presume?)

Alternatively, you could catch a bus to get to the city center. Bus services, operated by the Penang Yellow Bus Co. operates hourly services between the Airport and Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) from 6:00am to 10:00pm daily. Look out for Bus no. 83.

Penang Travel - Getting there by Rail

Trains, run by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), do not go straight into the Penang Island. The nearest railway station to get into Penang is situated at Butterworth, on the mainland. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth by rail takes approximately 6 hours. If you travel First or Second class, you get to travel in comfort in the air-conditioned coaches.

An alternative to flying and taking the bus would be to drive yourself to Penang. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, take the North-South highway and go northwards. Head towards the Penang Bridge toll. This bridge will lead you into Penang Island. The Penang Bridge toll is RM 7.00 per entry into Penang. However, no payment is required for exit to the mainland.
