Langkawi International Airport

Getting to Langkawi Island, The Legendary Island is fairly easy. There are a few ways to get there. You can either choose to get there by Air, by Bus, by Rail, by Ferry or by Road (if you choose to drive there yourself).


Pulau Langkawi - Getting There by Air

Langkawi Island is easily accessible by air with major airlines flying into the Langkawi International Airport. The airport is situated at Padang Matsirat, which is about 25 minutes drive from Kuah, the largest town in Langkawi Island.

Among the major airlines flying into the Langkawi International Airport are:

If you are coming from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the flight takes approximately an hour to reach the Langkawi International airport.

Taxis are available just outside the airport terminal. So, when you reach the airport, simply catch a taxi to get to your desired destination.


Pulau Langkawi - Getting There by Bus

To get to Langkawi by Bus, you have two options:

  1. Board a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar in Kedah. Once you're there, take a taxi from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah before boarding the ferry at the Kuala Kedah jetty to Langkawi Island.
  2. Board a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis in Perlis. Once you're there, board the ferry at the Kuala Perlis jetty to get to Langkawi Island.

There are a few bus operators serving the KL-Alor Setar and KL-Kuala Perlis route. Among them are:

Transnasional coaches depart Kuala Lumpur from the Hentian Duta station while the Maraliner buses depart Kuala Lumpur from Hentian Duta, Hentian Puduraya and Hentian Putra stations. They both arrive Alor Setar at Kompleks Bas Shahab Perdana and Kuala Perlis at Terminal Bas Ekspres Kuala Perlis.

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar takes about 6 hours. The taxi ride from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah is about 30 minutes and finally the ferry ride to Langkawi Island from the Kuala Kedah jetty is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis takes about 8 hours and the ferry ride to Langkawi Island from the Kuala Perlis jetty is approximately 45 minutes.


Pulau Langkawi - Getting There by Rail

Another alternative to get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur is by rail. Rail services are provided by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).

You have two options to get to Langkawi by rail:

  1. Board the train from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and alight the train at the Alor Setar railway station. The journey would take approximately 11 hours 45 minutes. From there, take a taxi to the Kuala Kedah jetty before boarding the ferry to Langkawi.
  2. Board the train from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and alight the train at the Arau railway station. The journey would take approximately 12 hours 15 minutes. From there, take a taxi to the Kuala Perlis jetty before boarding the ferry to Langkawi.


Pulau Langkawi - Getting There by Ferry

Ferries run daily every 30 minutes from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There are four ferry departure points to Langkawi. They are:

  1. Kuala Perlis in Perlis - Travel time to Langkawi: 45 minutes
  2. Kuala Kedah in Kedah - Travel time to Langkawi: 1 hour 15 minutes
  3. Georgetown in Penang - Travel time to Langkawi: 2 hour 15 minutes
  4. Satun in Thailand

All ferries arrive Langkawi at the jetty terminal in Kuah town.


Pulau Langkawi - Getting There by Road

If you're the type who enjoys driving, then you could choose to drive yourself to Kuala Kedah in Kedah to board the ferry to Langkawi. Getting to Kuala Kedah from Kuala Lumpur is fairly easy.

From Kuala Lumpur, hit the North-South Expressway and keep on heading North. Along the way, you would be passing by exits such as Rawang, Tanjung Malim, Simpang Pulai, Kuala Kangsar, Bukit Merah, Bukit Tambun, Sungai Petani Selatan, Sungai Petani Utara, Gurun before finally reaching Alor Star in Kedah. Take exit 177 (Alor Setar Selatan). From Alor Setar, follow the sign boards and drive towards Kuala Kedah. Once you're there, head for the jetty. That's where you'll board the ferry to Langkawi Island.
